1. Identify your Face Shape

Believe it or not, figuring out what will be the most fabulous hair doesn’t even begin with your hair! It begins with your face. Being able to identify your face shape is the foundation for great hair. Go over the face shapes listed and choose the one that best describes you.

The seven face shapes are:

Oval:

The oval face shape known to be thought of, as the ideal face shape, because of its contours and proportions of the oval shape allows those with it, the choice of all styles. We can use it as reference guide to modify all the other face shape.
Facial Proportions: 1 ½ time longer than the width across the brow, The forehead is a touch wider than the chin.

Round:

Our goal here is to add an illusion of length to this face shape. The use of a diagonal part (using the highest point of one eyebrow as a start guide, then back toward the center of the crown) can help create natural height and diagonal illusion to add length. This asymmetric illusion of sweeping hair across the forehead, down to the opposite side of the part is a great way to give the illusion of length and height. Push the hair on the light side of the part back to increase the diagonal.
Facial Proportions: round hairline, round chin and width across the face

Square:

This shape will require the same illusion of length as the round shape just adding that hair off the forehead then sweeping across the temples and jaw line can be important to this shape. Asymmetry is great for the square shape.
Facial Proportions: straight hair line and square jaw line

Pear:

You will need to create an illusion of width across the forehead. To do this build a full style with plenty of height and lot of movement .Add a soft airy bang then direct the hair at the side behind the ears to expose the jaw line and neck.
Facial proportions: a narrow forehead and wider jaw and chin.

Oblong:

The goal with an oblong shape is to create a shorter and wider appearance to do this combine bangs and add fullness the sides by directing the hair out and away from the cheeks. Avoid adding height to your style. Shorter chin length hair works nicely.
Facial Proportions: Long and narrow with hollow cheeks

Diamond:

Aim is to minimize the width at the cheek bones. Keep the hair tight to head at the cheekbones (tucking it behind your ears is fine ) . Swoopy (or diagonal) bangs that stay close to the forehead , keep your hair very full under the jaw line. This will create an oval appearance and minimize the width at the cheeks.
Facial proportions: Narrow forehead , very wide at the cheekbones and tapered chin

Heart:

The goal with this very photogenic face is to narrow the wide forehead and add width to the narrow chin. The only face shape that needs or can use a center part that will drape down the sides of the forehead to minimize the width and push the hair outwardly creating fullness to maximize width and add softness to the jaw line

**** you can be a combination of these Facial shapes,

**** Face shapes can change with age and with fluctuations in weight.

2. Choose Your Best Hair Color Range

Choosing the right hair color and makeup tones to compliment your features and skin tone Is essential. The color chart I have designed is here to assist you.

Using the color chart (download): Begin by choosing the colors that get you the most compliments. Then select your skin tone and eye color. These three choices should generally fall within one of the four-color types listed. You can double check your choices by comparing your coloring to the coloring of the personalities listed. Once you’ve determined your color type, the chart provides you with your ideal hair color range and highlights.

Warm (yellow tones) we will call Spring

Warm (golden tones) we will call Autumn

Cool ( soft pale blue-violet tones) we will call Summer

Cool ( pure white and blue tones) we will call Winter

Discuss the Current Condition of Your Hair

The current condition of your hair depends on what you’ve recently done to it. But how recent is recent? For example, your hair grows approx. ½ inch per month, so if you have 12 inches of hair, recent is the last 2 years. Included below are the important things to discuss about the current condition of you hair:

Have you done any chemical services in this period of time?
Chemical services include hair coloring, perms, relaxing treatments, or any home remedies where you have mixed two things together (this is a clue that peroxide has been added). If possible, bring into the salon the exact formula and product line you have used on your hair.

Have you had any medical treatments that include anesthesia or high doses of medicine, particularly those that include metals?

Do you swim in chlorinated water regularly?

Are you travelling, and are you aware of the condition of the water from one place to another?
Differentiating between your hair’s “virgin” or natural condition and its altered condition is critical to the choices need to be made based on all the information.

Define your Daily Commitment to Styling Your Hair
This is how long are you willing to work on your hairstyle and makeup (be honest!) This seems like a no-brainer, but if you give yourself 20 minutes to get to work and you’ve got a 30 minute hairstyle, something has to give. You’re going to get to work hungry and late. In addition, some people just don’t have the patience to work for more than 5 minutes on their hair so being honest will help you be able to maintain your new style.
If you treat your new style the same way the you’ve treated your hair in the past, in a very short time is will start looking the exact same as it used to.

Participate in Choosing Your Hair Style

Now that you’ve gathered information about your face shape and hair color, its time to use this as a foundation while you talk to your hairdresser about what you love and what you hate.

Understanding what you DISLIKE in this case is more important to your understanding what you LIKE. A good relationship starts with great communication. In a perfect world, your ideas given to someone who is creative should generate even better ideas as a combination of great communication. Letting your hairstylist know where its not ok to let his or her creativity go wild will save lots of time and tears.

Keys to a good consultation are:

Explaining and describing your likes and dislikes

Hearing back you’re likes and dislikes

Hearing ideas based on your likes and dislikes

Discussing and agreeing on a plan

Re-communicate one last time by re-stating the plan and hearing the plan re-stated again. This will create your final agreement.
You should agree on your face shape, your coloring, and the style and color that best suits you. It needs to be crystal clear from both of you in your final agreement.

Watch as Your Hair Plan is Being Carried Out
This is the time NOT to be shy. If you agreed on one inch, make sure one inch is taken off. It’s not terrible to ask “can you just show me exactly what you are taking off before you cut it?” A long lasting trust is based on communication. This communication is followed by carrying out an action that both parties has agreed on. Both parties have equal responsibility to making sure you look fabulous. Hairdressers want you to become so thrilled that you get addicted to us! So you better make sure that we do what we’ve agreed on.

Make Sure You Have the Right Tools To Recreate Your New Look At Home

Ok, so you’ve left the salon and your hair looks fabulous! But that’s just one day…if you get your hair cut every 6 weeks, and that one day out of 6 weeks of your hairdo so you better be able to do this at home, otherwise you got gipped. Understanding the process of styling your hair and having the tools to carry it out will give you 41 days of great hair back. Knowing what products the styling used to create the height on top or to relax your excessively coarse hair can be the foundation to re-creating your style.

Danika Ostrowski

* Miss Teen Southeast Texas 2008

*    Top 10 (8th Overall)

The ideal color tones for Ms. Teen Texas are warm yellows, found in the “spring” palette*. She is a spring with a slightly asymmetrical heart shaped face. A key to this makeover is to warm up the cool tones in her hair by slightly lightening her base and refreshing her eyelids to create the illusion of symmetry while keeping the forehead exposed for the perfect shape. I chose a slightly off-center part with long, cascading front to expose one cheek while camouflaging the others, eliminating any possible negative attention that could be an issue.
